The Writer (Screenwriter) is the author of the screenplay. Above-the-Line creative role — produces the foundational text that the Director + production interprets.
What the role does
- Develops the screenplay through outline, treatment, drafts, revisions
- Collaborates with director + producer on script development
- Provides rewrites + on-set revisions as the production demands
- May be credited as co-writer or uncredited depending on contribution shape
