Production Designer
The Production Designer is the head of the Art department and the principal visual author of the production. Designs the visual world — sets, locations, period detail, colour palette — in collaboration with the director, and leads not just the Art department but the wider visual triangle of Set Decorator and Construction.
What the role does
- Designs the production's visual world in collaboration with the director
- Produces concept art, mood boards, design references
- Designs sets — from concept through technical drawings (executed by Draughtsperson)
- Coordinates with Set Decorator on dressing, Costume Designer on character integration, Construction on build
- Leads the Art Director, Stand By Art Director, Assistant Art Director, Art Department Coordinator, Art Department Trainee
- Manages the Art + Construction + Set Decorating budget in coordination with Line Producer
Position
Reports to producer + director. Leads the Art department + coordinates with Set Decorating + Construction + Costume Designers.

SI Competency Framework Level 5 — HoD. Path: Art Department Trainee → Junior Draughtsperson → Draughtsperson → Assistant Art Director → Art Director → Production Designer.
