First Assistant Sound (Boom Operator)

The First Assistant Sound is the boom operator — the on-set role positioning a microphone on a boom pole to capture dialogue. Operates in direct coordination with the Production Sound Mixer.

What the role does

  • Operates the boom pole during takes — positioning the microphone for optimal dialogue capture without entering frame
  • Coordinates with the Production Sound Mixer on mic choice + positioning approach
  • Manages boom + mic cabling on set
  • Coordinates with camera + lighting on boom-shadow avoidance
  • Supports radio mic placement on cast

Position

Reports to Production Sound Mixer. Works closely with the camera department to avoid boom shadows.
