Extras Coordinator
The Extras Coordinator is the specialist AD-department role focused on background performers. Bridges between the Casting Director (who initially sources extras) and the AD department (who deploys them on set).
What the role does
- Coordinates extras booking in liaison with casting agencies
- Manages extras scheduling + call times
- Handles extras pay + paperwork in coordination with Production Accountant
- Briefs extras on costume, hair, makeup requirements
- Manages extras hold area logistics on set
- Coordinates with 3rd Assistant Director (3rd AD) on shoot-day placement
Position
Reports to 2nd Assistant Director (2nd AD) operationally. Works closely with Casting Director during prep + casting and with 3rd Assistant Director (3rd AD) during shoot.
Career progression
SI Competency Framework Level 3 — Experienced. Often a lateral role for experienced ADs specialising in crowd scenes / large-extras productions.
