Gaffer

The Gaffer is the head of the Electrical / Lighting department ("Sparks") under the Director of Photography (DoP / DP). Translates the DoP's lighting design into the practical rig — fixtures, distribution, power, control. Coordinates with Key Grip on rigging + camera-support interaction.

What the role does

• Implements the Director of Photography (DoP / DP)'s lighting design in practical fixtures
• Manages the lighting rig — fixture choice, placement, control
• Coordinates power supply + distribution
• Supervises Best Boy Electric, Electrician (Spark), Generator Operator, Electrician Trainee
• Coordinates with Key Grip on rigging interaction

Position

Reports to Director of Photography (DoP / DP). Supervises Electrical department.

Career progression

Path: Electrician Trainee → Electrician (Spark) → Best Boy Electric → Gaffer.
