SFX Supervisor (Special Effects)
The SFX Supervisor heads the practical Special Effects department — on-set mechanical effects, fire, water, breakaways, pyrotechnics, smoke, snow, weather effects. Distinct from VFX Supervisor who handles the digital effects.
What the role does
- Designs + executes practical effects on set
- Manages pyrotechnics + fire + explosives (with appropriate licensing)
- Coordinates mechanical rigs — breakaways, mechanical animations
- Coordinates with Stunt Coordinator on overlapping action sequences
- Carries safety + risk-assessment accountability for SFX work
- Supervises SFX Technician
Position
Reports to director + producer. Coordinates with Stunt Coordinator and VFX Supervisor.
Career progression
Specialist craft career. Pyrotechnics require national licensing; specialist insurance attaches.
Working pattern
Freelance, shoot-heavy when SFX-active.
