Sustainability Lead
The Sustainability Lead (sometimes "Carbon Coordinator" or "Sustainability Manager") is the named individual responsible for the production's Sustainability — Albert, Green Stamp, Adgreen reporting and Carbon Action Plan. Required wherever the production is going for Albert / Screen Ireland Green Stamp / Adgreen certification.
Cross-company role
The Sustainability Lead is commonly a freelance role. One person typically carries the lead on several productions across multiple production companies in parallel — broadcaster delivery gates make sustainability sign-off a hard requirement, which makes the role widespread.
Responsibilities
- Nominate the certification programme (Albert / SI Green Stamp / Adgreen / Other)
- Run the Carbon Action Plan (CAP) lifecycle: - Footprint report (drafted → submitted → accepted) - Carbon Action Plan - Post-production reconciliation
- Track operational practices through the shoot (paperless / EV kit / battery genny / etc.)
- Publish the broadcaster-required sign-off (Albert sign-off is a hard delivery gate)
- Liaise with the certifying body throughout
Distinct from the SDO
Both are skills-adjacent freelance roles; both are typically appointed per production; both can carry several productions in parallel. But they are different functions:
| Skills Development Officer (SDO) | Sustainability Lead | |
|---|---|---|
| Owns | Skills development plan | Carbon Action Plan |
| Reports to | Producer + Screen Ireland | Producer + certifying body (BAFTA Albert / SI Green Stamp / Adgreen) |
| Driven by | S481 / S487A skills requirement | Broadcaster delivery gates + state aid sustainability principles |
